Salal is the family name Jesse and Lauren use; it isn't their legal surname. The word comes from Chinook Wawa, the old trade language of Cascadia, and names an evergreen shrub (Gaultheria shallon) that carpets the forest floor west of the Cascades. It's sturdy and thrives in this mild coastal climate, and its dark, slightly funky berries were a valued food for the region's Indigenous peoples, who pressed them into dried cakes to last the winter.
